Not long from now, we’ll view the current grid system as we view the telegraph. Kids will look at fossil fuels like alchemy. “How did you turn dirt into electricity?” They’ll ask us what a grid is, what a blackout was like, and why we ran out of electricity when there’s a sun and everything else. They’ll be baffled that we drove around in cars powered by explosions of whale-oil or whatever. Like, WHAT!!? Being green is awesome, but the clean energy revolution is also about living better.
Welcome to Home Power
I’m your host, James Nielson. One of my pleasures is thinking about the “blessing and curse” traits people have. Do you know what yours is? I believe mine is the compulsion to gaze off to the horizon and babble about the future. Not that I’m a bona fide fortune-teller. More of a hobbyist Cassandra and terminal what-iffer. But if my review of an air conditioner gets a little deep, I’ll also include the spec sheets and wiring diagrams for people who prefer those.
I’m also a compulsive tinkerer and DIY’er. I love researching and rethinking our “ways, means and ends” in order to level-up our lifestyles and squash some of the bugs that have hitched a free ride on the back of “progress”. Whether we’re trying out the latest energy efficient gadget, baking muffins in a solar oven, praising(!?) the wood burning stove , or waxing poetic about the joy of hanging socks on a clothesline while sipping sun tea, the star that guides us will be Quality of Life.
Home is where you hang your QOL
Nothing says “Quality of Life” more than our homes. Whether they’re yurts, tiny houses, vacation rentals, hobbit holes, ADU’s, off-grid shacks, apartments or a fortress of solitude, our homes are our power centers, in more ways than one. While the clean energy revolution is exciting, the aim of Home Power is to play it’s small, practical bit and talk about, well, homes and power. I hope to manifest something meaningful and useful to myself and others who seek deeper, slower, richer and more powerful lives. As we achieve that, environmental sustainability is inevitable, and now more than ever with solar, wind power, EV’s and other facets of the clean energy revolution in play.
And so, welcome to an afternoon tea-and-philosophy session about the big and small ideas around how we use, conserve, generate, incentivize and think about power during this ongoing energy revolution.
Welcome aboard,
James Nielson
